Condemns opponent Jim Trakas for accepting thousands of dollars in support from Tony George who opposes LGBT protection
Sept. 24, 2018 – The proposed charter amendment in front of the County Council to extend fundamental rights to the LGBTQ community is an obvious and crucial step to ensure that we all are equal under the law and that the businesses and communities of Cuyahoga County welcome, protect and encourage all people to help our region grow and thrive.
“Ever since the gay rights movement was launched on a summer night in 1969, the LGBTQ community has been fighting for the same protections afforded others. And while we’ve come a long way from the days when someone could be arrested for simply going to a bar, there’s much more work to be done,” said Phil Robinson, Democratic candidate for House District 06. “Unfortunately, my opponent is being bankrolled by Tony George, who opposes protection for the LGBT community.”
Jim Trakas, Republican candidate for House District 6, has taken tens of thousands of dollars from Tony George, who is also hosting a fundraiser for Trakas on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
“It’s unfortunate that a major supporter of my opponent – who happens to be hosting a fundraiser for him on Tuesday – is doing everything in his power to intimidate Cuyahoga County Council into rejecting an amendment that extends basic rights to the LGBTQ community,” Robinson said. “Issues like this make it all the more clear why this election is so important. We need to ensure that the people we elect to represent us reflect our shared values and diversity, and won’t actively work to continue to repress marginalized groups at the bidding of wealthy donors and special interest groups.”
