Policy & Values
In just one short year Kasich, Duffey, and their fellow Republicans pushed SB5; defunded our public schools; attacked women’s rights, voting rights, and workers’ rights; reneged on commitments to local governments; sold valuable public assets at below market value; and promoted insider, trickle-down economic policies that benefit their political interests more than our jobs picture. We’ll pursue a different set of policies, based on a different set of values. Here are our priorities:
Education: The Foundation of Who We Are
Renewing Commitment to Our Public Schools: I believe our public common schools are the very foundation of our democratic, opportunity-driven society, and must be vigorously defended. We will work to restore funding to our public schools; respect our educational professionals by recognizing their right to organize, negotiate, and lead reforms; and require accountability and transparency of charter schools.
Keeping College Affordable: Too many young Ohioans graduate from college saddled with extreme debt, or avoid college entirely because of the high cost. I’ll work to keep our colleges accessible and affordable for all Ohioans who want to pursue a higher education. An educated workforce attracts business and is needed to keep good jobs in Ohio.
Investing in Early Childhood Development: A healthy start in life gives kids a fair shot at growing up to be responsible, productive adults. So I’ll support low-cost, high-impact programs such as Help Me Grow and Early Head Start. These programs benefit us all.
Jobs and the Rebuilding of Our Economy
Focusing on Small and Emerging Businesses: Small, emerging businesses are at the heart of our economic strength. They innovate, create jobs, and support our local economies. Rather than giving big tax breaks to big businesses, like Kasich and Duffey do, we’ll focus on supporting Ohio’s inventors, entrepreneurs, and small businesses.
Real Job Creation: Rather than stealing jobs from another state, I’ll work to foster new job creation from within Ohio. At the heart of this effort is the strengthening of our industrial infrastructure—our skilled workforce, robust supply-chain, logistical capabilities, access to R&D, and so on—that supports both innovation and commercialization of high-value products.
Innovation and the Clean Energy Economy: We can create many skilled jobs by being smarter about the way we generate and use energy. The benefits and cost savings are compelling, and all that is required is the political will to make them real. I possess that will.
Reforming Our Political Systems
Lobbyists and the Revolving Door: Our political and governmental processes have become corrupted by the power of special interest money, threatening the health of our democratic system. I will fight to:
- Enact large cuts in the maximum allowable political contribution to state level campaigns, from PACs and individuals, currently several times the amount allowed for federal campaigns.
- Conduct hearings in to the relationship between lobbyists and lobbying firms and our elected officials, and to do all that is legally possible to stop the revolving door and corrupting influence of special interest money in distorting our public policy.
- Permit recall elections, with a high threshold to avoid frivolous action, of state level elected officials, from the Governor on down; and 4) review all aspects of the health and pension benefits of elected officials and make sure they are in line with those of other public sector employees, or better yet, the private sector.
